Ship Operations Facility Design – U.S. Navy, Pearl Harbor, HI

This operations facility design project involved the retrofit of an existing historic pier and the construction of a new 17,000-square-foot building Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

The new building is constructed of split-faced concrete masonry units (CMU) accented with decorative horizontal bands.  This provided a cost-effective yet pleasing exterior design aesthetic. The project included 1,004 square meters (10,807 s.f.) of administrative space and 574 square meters (6,178 s.f.) of warehouse space.

The project location presented unique challenges to meet the Department of Defense anti-terrorism and force protection (AT/FP) requirements. However, with careful design consideration and extensive collaboration between the design team and the Base authorities, all ATFP requirements were met.

The historic pier portion of the project involved:

  • Retrofit upgrades to the electrical systems
  • New lighting fixtures,
  • New power and data wiring

In addition to this being a design-build project, this project was a joint effort between multiple federal agencies, including Hickam Air Force Base, Pearl Harbor Naval Station, and the Army Corps of Engineers.  Our prior federal government experience and strong communication among all parties helped us achieve successful completion of the project.
